Research, Interests.

I am a retired research scientist and lecturer of Ritsumeikan University, Japan. My recent research includes Australian finches (Gouldian, Zebra, Society finches, etc), and Japanese art (in particular Shin-Hanga, pre-WW2 publishers of prints, and the artist Tsuchiya Koitsu). My previous research includes the automatic detection and classification of freshwater bacteria and plankton in Lake Biwa, using image processing and pattern recognition techniques. I was a researcher at Lake Biwa Research Institute, and a researcher and part-time lecturer at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Queensland, Australia. I was a member of CSSIP's Medical Diagnostics group at the University of Queensland, undertaking research in the area of Pap Smear analysis and classification. Specifically, my interest was in feature extraction and classification of cell nuclei, using self-adaptive, multi-scale texture analysis. This novel technique, which directly targets discriminatory information in texture images, is introduced in my PhD thesis (see below)

I enjoy nature and am a keen environmentalist. I also have an interest in alternative energies and enjoy putting theory into practice by including solar energy as a source for my home's energy needs. Astrophotography, and electronic design and construction take up some of my leisure time, and I am the holder of Amateur Radio Licence VK4ASO. I have a great interest in Asian (particularly Japanese) culture and society, and I am a speaker of Japanese. Currently, I'm living in the city of Otsu, Japan, beside Lake Biwa.
